Beware Second Hand Smokers

It is estimated that more than 60,000 people die every year world over from lung cancer as a result of inhaling other people smoke' !!!

Tobacco smoke is a deadly mixture of some 4000 chemicals, including 200 known poisons - 43 of which are known carcinogens. Despite no wish to smoke, these second hand smokers are "forced" to take in Tobacco smoke from the air. Many studies have now proved that this form of smoking can have harmful effects like irritating eyes and nose causing headache, cough, allergies and aggravating asthma.

In 1993, after an analysis of 24 research projets in eight different countries, scientists at the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) declared second-hand cigarette smoke to be a "Group A carcinogen" - a substance that definitely causes cancer in humans.

WHO estimates that about 700 million children, almost half of all children world-wide, live in a home where at least one parent is a smoker. The tragic impact of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS) on child health are:

• Suffer more coughs and colds and from more lower respiratory tract infections such as bronchitis and pneumonia.

• have an increased chance of developing asthma, triggering off or making existing asthma worse.

• have an increased risk of developing middle-ear infections which can lead to reduced hearing.

• are at increased risk of lymphoma (cancer of white blood cells) and brain tumors during childhood.
